Arkansas football freshman tight end blooms in day three of fall camp

Aug 14, 2023

Arkansas football held its third fall football practice Sunday morning with the team starting inside before the clouds cleared and the Razorbacks moved some drills outside the Fred W. Smith Football Center.

In total, the Hogs will practice 20 times before Week 1, and they'll hold seven practices before their first scrimmage on Aug. 12.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday's 15-minute open portion of practice:

The first thing reporters saw when walking inside the facility Sunday was the freshman tight end laying a punishing block during bubble-screen drills. A few plays later, Hasz did the same thing.

And when the Hogs went outside for some inside run drills, Hasz made another imposing block on Antonio Grier that sprung Dominique Johnson for a big gain.

Head coach Sam Pittman has talked all offseason about his team needing to be more physical this fall, and Hasz is answering the call. The tight end from Oklahoma also looks like a fluid athlete who can make defenders miss with the ball in his hands. It seems like a matter of time before Hasz makes a big impact on Saturdays.

Through the first three practices, Arkansas still hasn't taken a snap under center during its 'Fastball' period, where first, second and third team offense and defense go against each other for four reps each.

Dan Enos is expected to bring a more traditional offense, and there were times in passing drills that the quarterbacks practiced drop backs under center, but we still haven't seen it in the 'Fastball' drill. The majority of the offense might still come from the shotgun, with a team hopefully comfortable going under center when the situation requires.

The transfer from North Carolina was bright during the 'Fastball' drill, connecting with Isaiah Sategna for a lengthy gain on the first play and closing the session by avoiding pressure and running up the right side for positive yardage.

But in 2-on-2 drills a bit later, Criswell threw a pair of interceptions. Jayden Johnson and Christian Ford recorded the picks.

Regardless of the highs and lows, Criswell has a hold of the backup quarterback job through three days of camp. He's been with the second team every day, while Cade Fortin and freshman Malachi Singleton split time today with the third team.
